Broader,deeper, more universal – Sercos III Specification Update V1.3 available
The Sercos vendor organizations have released an updateto the specification for the Sercos III Real-time Ethernet solution.
The V1.3 specification broadens thefunctionality and the range of applications of the international Sercosreal-timestandard, while considering new trends in machine and plantconstruction. Theextensions are fully compatible with the existing specification so thatthehigh level of standardization and the best possible interoperability ofdevicesfrom different manufacturers can be ensured.
Following the lead of electronicdrives, hydraulics and pneumatics are turning more and more towardsdigitallycontrolled modules. This increases flexibility and shifts taskspreviouslysolved by mechanical means to software solutions. The Sercosorganizationrecognizes the importance of this trend and has extended the existingSercosdrive profile such that electric, hydraulic and pneumatic drives nowaresupported across different technologies.
Two new profiles have been added tothe Sercos specification. The energy profile defines parameters andcommandsfor the reduction of the energy consumption in a uniform andvendor-independent manner. An encoder profile makes the interface ofabsolute and incrementalencoders available to all devices on a Sercos network.
The following new services are specifiedat the protocol level: oversampling and time-stamping. The oversamplingprocedure allows the acquisition and transmission of equidistant valuesfasterthan the configured bus or connection cycle. This increases the processcontrolintricacy in extremely time-critical applications, such as laserapplications,because it allows more data to be collected and command values to becommunicatedat a faster speed. Measurement methods are integrated directly into theprotocol, thereby making it possible to access these mechanisms acrossdifferent manufacturers and independently of the product.
In addition, the specificationdefines a time-stamping procedure for the event-triggered acquisitionof valueswith corresponding time stamps, as well as the time-triggeredactivation ofcommand values. This function is event-controlled, promptlytransmittingdefined events such as certain measurement values to the controller andswitching outputs independently from the clock cycle. This increasesprocessstability in complex solutions such as those needed in semiconductor orsolar manufacturing.
Thespecification update is completed by an installation guide thatspecifies cablingwith copper wire and optical fiber, each in consideration of IP20 andIP65/67protection classes.
